Lesson 5: dwarven and elven runes

In Lesson 5 we will take a deeper look at some of the youngest runes found on earth. They were invented by the wizard Tolkien in 1936 to describe his world of middle earth. Not many people knew that Tolkien was a wizard and that he wanted to educate the muggle world with his books. He wrote about a fantasy world but the runes he created can actually be used by anybody who has the skill to read, understand and magically form them. Tolkien created two types of runes: the dwarven runes and the elven runes. Much like the dragon runes, you can recreate these runes by forming their symbol in your head. The rune set Tolkien created are the hardest runes to create magically and they are the most difficult to use in battle. Let us take a deeper look in the difference between the elven and dwarven runes.

The first difference is that the dwarven runes are hard runes and the elven runes are soft runes. Hard means they are spoken harshly, while soft means the words are generally sung rather than spoken. Much like the hardness of the dwarves and the tenderness of the elves so the runes form to their speaker. Both runes can be used in battle but the dwarven runes are more for fighting, while the elven runes are more for healing. However, make no mistake in thinking that the dwarven runes don't use healing spells and that the elven runes don't have attack spells. Now let us take a look at the set of runes Tolkien created.

Dwarven Runes

The dwarven runes or the Angerthas are the runic set used by the dwarves to both enchant things and write things. The first set of dwarven runes were created by elven lore master Daeron of Doriath and they were inspired by the Tengwar script of Feanor. The dwarves learned their rune language from the elves but they adapted it to their own language - the Khuzdul. The letters are thin and angular and are spoken in a harsh matter. Also the fact they were mostly written on wood, metal or stone does this give the rune a harsh angle. Dwarves also used the runes to beautify their halls. The dwarves called these runes Moon letters and they where enchanted in such a matter they lit up when the moon light struck them. Nowadays the dwarves are known as the dwemer and the rune set they use are called Angerthas Moria and Angerthas Erebor. They are two different rune sets with their own mechanism to it. The angerthas Moria are used to enchanted their tools, weapons and guardians. The angerthas erebor are used to heal and defend.

The most dangerous use of the dwarven runes are found in their automatons whom are rumoured to still roam the dwemer runes today. Be very careful when approaching an automaton for they will shoot fireballs at you. The dwemer created the automatons by crafting them from metal or wood. They used the rune NIrms life (fang i nach) to bring the toys to life. Through the years most of the dwarven runes vanished from the face of the earth as no records of them were ever made of them. The dwarven runes of old are decaying fast and the MOM has found it dangerous to investigate the runes due to the automatons ,and the hazard of collapsing buildings. Luckily we were able to recover the alfabeth the dwarfs used. And this allows us to create our rune spells.

Elven Runes

The runes that the Elven people invented according to Tolkien have many dialects and variations of which the Sindarin and the Quenya are the most known and most commonly used. Quenya is better known as high elvish while SIndarin are the runes of the grey elves. Both the Quenya and the Sindarin are divinations of the most widely known elven language runes: the Feanorian Letters or the Tengwar. According to Tolkien, both rune sets were invented by Feanor. The elven runes have a soft edge to them and are swirly in writing. They are usually sung rather than spoken when being used in battle. Elven runes are mostly used for healing but they can also be used in battle; however elven runes lean more toward defence than attack. Elven runes have a special ability - they can calm anybody or anything. When spoken of a smaller animal, the animal will help the caster, or when spoken over a person the spell will immediatly calm the rage inside. The spell for this incantation is calm sense (hen na du).

Elven runes were created to improve the world, to help see the beauty in everything. The elven runes are the most preserved runes of all the rune sets but Tolkien never revealed what kind of spells the elves used. He only shared their alphabet.
