Lesson 1: history of the Magical rune
Runes or runo / run are the Nordic set of letters forming the runic alphabet. The magical runes are a set of runes that find their existence in the study of ancient runes. In 1864, witch Helena Undramore discovered the magical properties of the rune for use during duels. In 1785, 13 dragon priests formed a secret society and between 1786 and 1810, this secret society created the dragon runes. The history of magical runes however, goes much deeper into our history than the dates mentioned above.
The earliest runes date back to 150 AD and with the rise and formation of the study into ancient runes, so began the formation of the magical rune. Runes were originally used to educate people but they are also known to possess powerful spells. In 1100 AD, the witch Driar Loghnach created the first set of magical runes called elder farnark. Driar used her own magical essence to infuse the runes with magical properties. A rune by itself doesn't posses magical abilities but when placed in a certain order and form and then infused with magic, a rune becomes magical with many properties.
The three best-known runic alphabets are the Elder Futhark (around 150–800 AD), the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc (400–1100 AD), and the Younger Futhark (800–1100 AD). The elder farnark is a combination of these three runic scripts. It is said that the elder futhark, the anglo-saxon futhorc and the younger futhark are formed from even older scripts dating back to the Egyptians.
The first description of magic inside runes or hieroglyphs was the word Heka which means magic in ancient egyptian. Quite simple isn't it? The older Egyptians formed the basis for the magical runes as Driar used the word Heka to form the elder farnark as a basis, of course she also used more sources to create her rune set. It took her 35 years to complete the set of runes. Later scripts dating from the ancient romans detailing "magica" or magic, tell us about a force inside everything that fuels the magic inside. Driar found this source inside herself and she used that very source to create her runes. According yo the romans the source was called "essentia magicae" or essence of magic. They described it as a force of magic flowing inside everything. It fuels spells and magical objects and isn't easy to describe. Driar used the source to create the elder farnark. How she did this remains unclear as her notes got lost in a fire.
The magical runes Driar created were forgotten through time and history but were re-discovered in 1785 by the dragon priest who used the runes to create their dragon runes. Many great deeds of evil were performed by the dragons runes but nowadays they can be used for good (see Lesson 4). In 1864, witch Helena Undramore used the elder farnark to create the use of magical runes in dueling (see Lesson 3).
